This year, the Horse Show at The Columbia County Fair in Chatham is moving to the Main Rink with grandstand viewing. Fans will have a chance to see their favorite equestrians in a larger venue without competition from other events. It will take place on August 25th – three days before the official opening of the Fair.

Whether a fan of horse jumping, English riding or Western-style, the Columbia County Fair has something for everyone.

Fans of show riding and jumping should mark their calendars for August 25th.  The Fair has moved up the Horse Show in order to allow competitors to show in the main rink.  “We felt that this competition deserved more attention,” said a Fair spokesperson.  “Now viewers can sit in the grandstand and horses have more room to work.  We wanted to recognize all the horsemanship in this county and this is the best way to do that.”  The show begins at 8:30AM three days prior to the official opening of the Fair.

More riding expertise will take place on Monday, Labor Day, when the Painted Pony Rodeo kicks off at 5:00 PM.  Watch regional cowboys and cowgirls compete for points towards a championship silver belt buckle.  Like barrel racing?  Trick riding?  Calf roping?  That’s just the beginning.  Racers show their expertise with speed and agility.  There’s also the competitors who risk life and limb bull riding and bronco busting.  Not only are the riders judged, so are the animals.  By the time the season is over, the competition gets harder and harder as prime animals, the more ornery the better, are paired with top riders.  The rodeo is fun, exciting and dusty. Those hooves can kick up some dirt!

There’s plenty more to enjoy at the Fair this year.  In Heritage Village, learn what goes into candle making, fly tying, basket weaving or leather work.  See yarn spinning, dyed wool and beautiful knitted pieces in the Wool Booth.  Marvel at gorgeous flower arrangements from area Garden Clubs in Columbia Hall, and blue ribbon sunflowers at Four Corners Hall.  There’s much more going on every day – and evening.
